Keyboard Undergraduate Auditions
In addition to meeting the general requirements for admission to the university, students must successfully complete an audition in order to be admitted to music degree study in the School of Music. See Audition Day for the School of Music audition information. Additional auditions may be arranged by contacting Dr. Mark Stevens at (509) 335-7804 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Auditions will be attended by at least two piano faculty members. The students performance will be evaluated, and recommendations for scholarship, if applicable, will be made to the School of Music. Early arrangement of auditions is strongly encouraged. For fullest scholarship consideration, the audition must take place by March 1 for fall admission. In the audition, students are required to perform from memory two solo piano pieces from different stylistic periods. In addition, students will be asked to sightread a short composition and demonstrate technical proficiency by playing scales and arpeggios, or other exercises, in various keys.
All incoming music majors are required to take a music theory placement examination, which consists of a written and an applied theory portion. This examination is administered at the audition. Students will be placed in the appropriate theory classes based upon their examination results. If students admitted into the music program would like to retake this examination for a better result, they may do so in the first week of classes. Students are strongly advised to prepare for this examination.
