Non-traditional Performance/Prepared Piano Policy

The School of Music is dedicated to maintaining and preserving the quality of our instruments, particularly those in the concert halls.

All instances of nontraditional piano use (insertion of objects, marking of strings or dampers, plucking, bowing, drumming, strumming, etc.) must be approved by the piano technician and the Keyboard Area Coordinator. Prepared piano will be approved on a case-by-case basis. No preparing may be done prior to approval.

Appropriate notification and approval for similar use of any practice, classroom, or studio piano is also required.

In order to prevent any last-minute programming changes, all faculty, students, and guest artists are encouraged to consult with the piano technician regarding repertoire with nontraditional performance aspects or prepared piano for recital performances as soon as possible.
