Keyboard Graduate Assistantships

in Accompanying and Class Piano

The Program

WSU offers the Master of Arts in Music with emphases in Performance (including conducting), Music Education and Composition. The Graduate Music Program is a small but extremely effective program, fully accredited by NASM, and placing nearly all of its graduates in employment in the field of music or in outstanding music doctoral programs. Financial Information

Assistantships include a stipend of up to $10,870 per year in direct salary. Normally, full tuition waiver is also included – about $6,000 for in-state and $15,000 for out-of-state (tuition figures are close estimations of 2002-03 tuition.) Total value is $16,870-$25,870. Assistants pay only activities and optional health fees which may amount to about $1100 per year.


Duties include: accompanying individual students, ensembles, and occasionally faculty, in juries, performances, and rehearsals, teaching class piano for music majors and/or non-majors, depending on candidates background and interests, teaching school aged students in pedagogy lab school.

Application and Admission

Students apply to the WSU Graduate School for admission. The Graduate School requires official transcripts from all institutions attended for undergraduate study.

Music applicants must complete an audition for appropriate music faculty. Auditions in person are preferred; tapes will be accepted. Applicants pursuing emphases in composition or music education may be asked to supply additional materials.

Assistantship applicants must submit three current letters of recommendation directly to the Music Program. For fullest consideration please submit completed application prior to April 1.
